Elkin Fact Sheet:
Elkin is a town in Surry County, North Carolina which is conveniently located near I-77 and NC Highway 21. Elkin´s population is approximately 4000. North Carolina is divided into 3 regions: Mountains, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain--and Elkin is in the northwest Piedmont of North Carolina. The Yadkin River separates Downtown Elkin from the Town of Jonesville, NC. Thus, Elkin is part of the Yadkin Valley area which has become known as the Yadkin Valley Wine Region or Yadkin Valley Appellation. Elkin has a Historic Downtown Shopping District and a Freight railroad that runs through the downtown area. Elkin Education Information:
Local schools within the Town of Elkin are Elkin Elementary, Elkin Middle School, and Elkin High School which are each part of the Elkin City Schools System. For additional educational opportunities, Elkin residents are 20-minutes from Surry Community College, 30-minutes from
Wilkes Community College, an hour from area colleges and universities in Winston-Salem, 1 ½ hours from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and less than two hours away from colleges and universities in Charlotte, NC.
Elkin Medical Data:
Elkin has its own hospital, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, which has had many renovations, improvements, and additions recently. Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital is now a Regional Cancer Center providing radiation therapy and chemotherapy services to cancer patients in conjunction with the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. HCMH has a Wound Care Center, state-of-the-art surgical facilities, and a Birthing Center. At Hugh Chatham, you´ll find a Skilled Nursing Facility and Assisted Living, along with a Special Care Unit for dementia patients. Elkin residents are also less than an hour from both: Forsyth Medical Center and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC, and are about 30-minutes from both: Iredell Memorial Hospital and Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville, NC.
