A Community with Traditions 
The Town of Dobosn was founded in 1850 as a consequence of a geographical division of Surry County by the North Carolina General Assemply.  A central site was needed for a new County Seat, and the courthouse was completed in 1853.  The Town was named in honor of William Polk Dobson, a prominent Surry County Citizen, StateSenator, farmer, lawyer and a member of the State constitutional convention of 1835.  He was a cousin of President James Knox Polk.

From1853 forward, Dobson has served as the host community for the Surry County Government and has served as the retail, commercial and employment center for central Surry County.

Dobson became the host community for Surry Community College in 1964.  The college officially serves both Surry and yadkin counties, offering a variety of degree and diploma programs, as well as providing four year educational opportunities.  Surry Community College offers the msot complete viticulture and enology program on the east coast other than Colgate University.  With proximity to Interestate Highways 74 and 77, Dobson provides a southern gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway and is at the heart of the Yadkin Valley Wine Region.

Dobson is a growing area with several new subdivisions in the past few years.  Many of these subdivisions have upscale or high-end houses.  The out lying sections of Dobson are mainly large acreage farms.  Farming activities around Dobson include:  tobacco, corn, horses and cattle.

From the Town of Dobson, you are just minutes away from several area medical facilities.  Both Northern Surry Hospital in Mt. Airy, NC, and Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, NC, are only 20-minutes from Dobson.  45-minutes down I-77 are Iredell Memorial Hospital and Davis Regional Medical Center  in Statesville.  Both Forsyth Medical Center  and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center  are an hour away in Winston-Salem, NC.

Four different schools are located within Dobson, NC: Dobson Elementary, Central Middle School, Surry Central High School, and Surry Community College.  Dobson is also an hour from area colleges and universities in Winston-Salem, 1 ½ hours from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and two hours from colleges and universities in Charlotte, NC.
