State Road is an unincorporated community located in the Bryan Township of Surry County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the State Road postal district (28676) had a total population of 3,047.[1] The community's unique name is derived from its location on U.S. Route 21.  The community of State Road is located in both Wilkes and Surry Counties. State Road Shopping Information As State Road has NC Highway 21 dividing the area, it not only allows easy access to Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital but also allows easy access to shopping in Elkin.  A resident in State Road is just 1 to 5 miles from Wal-Mart and other North Elkin Shopping Centers.  However, State Road has its own community shopping center featuring an old-fashion hardware store, small grocery, barber and beauty shops and a restaurant which are all located across the road from the State Road Veterinary Clinic.  State Road also has a set of storage rental units.  If you prefer larger shopping centers in bigger towns and cities, then a 45-minute drive will take you to the largest mall in North Carolina, Hanes Mall, on the west side of Winston-Salem making it convenient to shoppers from State Road.
