Growing grapes for winemaking in North Carolina actually dates back to the late 1800's. Within a few decades, however, most of those vineyards stopped production. It was in the 1980's that growing grapes and winemaking began to catch on again in the Tarheel State. In recent years, the Yadkin Valley Appellation was named the first American Viticultural Area in North Carolina. However, the Yadkin Valley, which has over 19 vineyards and wineries, is not the only area in North Carolina where grape growers and winemakers can be found.
