Welcome to Surry County, North Carolina, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Surry County is home to 4 major towns and numerous small communities.  The major towns are Elkin, Mt. Airy, Pilot Mountain and the county seat of Dobson.  Interstate 77 takes you through Surry County, making it a great place for an overnight visit or an extended stay. Well in fall of the year in Surry County and time for the many festivals to showcase the area.  The first of the many festivals is kicked off by the Pumpkin Festival in Downtown Elkin on September 29th.  On October 12th-14th enjoy the leaves at the annual Autumn Leaves Festival in Mt. Airy.  The first Saturday of the month, the Edwards-Franklin home is the host of the sonker festival.  Make your plans to visit the Yadkin Valley and enjoy the festivals and the ever changing fall leaves and scenery.

Surry County is located in the Yadkin Valley Appellation.
In recent years, the Yadkin Valley Wine Region was named the first American Viticultural Area in North Carolina. There are several vineyards and wineries in the Yadkin Valley area that are open to the public for tours, wine-tasting, and other events throughout the year. For the past 7 years, the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival has been held in May at the Elkin Municipal Park. The Yadkin Valley Wine Festival is open to the public and is attended by people from all across the country and around the world. Local wine vendors, food vendors, and craftsman set up booths and displays. Those attending the Wine Festival can enjoy live entertainment, food, fun, and activities for the entire family. The Annual Yadkin Valley Wine Festival is held in May. This year Mt. Airy will be hosting the first annual Bud Break Festival from April 28-May 1st.  It will be featuring many local wineries and restaurants.

The Yadkin Valley area is home to several wineries and vineyards with wonderful scenic views and great wine. Several of the wineries also have wonderful restaurants. Surry County features the  Shelton Vineyards, Brushy Mtn. Winery, Grassy Creek Vineyard and Winery, and Round Peak Vineyards. Plan your trip and stay for several days to make sure you visit each winery. There are several wineries in the adjoining counties of Wilkes and Yadkin which will make for a fun filled trip.

If canoing and fishing are your favorite past time, then this area has several options. Put your canoe in at the Crater Park in Elkin, Roy Burgess access in Historic Rockford and float the Yadkin River. While floating you can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife or fish while you float.   Enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Mitchell River one of the best trout streams in North Carolina.  For more area information on Surry County visit the very surry website.


Accomodations are available from motels, cabins on the river, bed and breakfast or vacation homes.  The Hampton Inn is located just of I-77 at the Dobson area, it is the areas newest motel.  Mitchell River House is a fully furnished farmhouse on the Mitchell River that can be rented by the week or day.  Frog Hollar Cabins is located on the Big Elkin Creek and is close to several area wineries.
