North Carolina Information:
     Welcome to the great state of North Carolina.  This article is designed to introduce you to our state and to highlight some of the reasons folks here like calling North Carolina home.  In the 1600's, King Charles of England directed that the land from Albemarle Sound to the St. John's River be called Carolina. The word Carolina is from the Latin form of Charles.  Later, North Carolina was divided into two states.  The southern part called South Carolina and the northern part, North Carolina.  Therefore, North Carolina was given the nickname "The Old North State."   North Carolina was one of the original 13 states.  The North Carolina Colony was the first to declare independence from Great Britain on April 12, 1776.  Then on November 21, 1789, North Carolina ratified the Constitution to become the twelfth state in the Union.  The nickname "Tarheels" was not originally from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, although that is how it is most used today.  After a particularly fierce battle during the Civil War involving troops from North Carolina, General Robert E. Lee was quoted as saying, "There they stand as if they have tar on their heels."  The other two legends were related to North Carolina´s early products: tar and pitch.   Some other basic facts about North Carolina:  we are bordered to the north by Virginia, bordered to the west by Tennesse, to the southwest by Georgia, to the south by South Carolina, and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.  Located midway between New York and Florida, the Southern and/or Mid-Atlantic state is divided into three geographical regions:  Mountain, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain.  As for climate, North Carolina experiences all four seasons of the year.  While the mountains have more snow than the other regions, it is not unheard of to have snow along the coast during the winter months.  According to the 2005 U.S. Census Bureau, North Carolina has an estimated population of 8,683,242.  North Carolina has 100 counties, our state capitol is Raleigh, our state bird is the Cardinal, and Agriculture is the leading industry in North Carolina.  For more information on North Carolina, click here.  Below are links to realtors who can help you call North Carolina home!
